United States of America

America offers hikers (whether those just getting away for the weekend or for the more adventurous) a huge selection of trails, wilderness trips and treks across this vast continent.

Amongst the numerous national parks to choose from, here is a selection of some of the most popular:

Bryce Canyon, UT

Surrounded by aspen and pine forests, Bryce Canyon is a mass of natural rock formations in an assortment of creature-like shapes and changing colors of bright reds, yellows and oranges. Attributed with supernatural powers by the Piaute Indians who called it ‘red rocks standing like men in a bowl-shaped canyon’.

The Grand Canyon, AZ

Claimed to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is almost impossible to describe the magnificence or magnitude of this amazing place which took more than two billion years to form to what it is today.

Also attributed to have supernatural powers by local Indian tribes, much of the area is now home to Hopi, Navajo and Havasupai reservations who sell authentic Indian handicrafts outside the park boundaries.

The Canyon may be explored either on foot, descending it by burro or by small aircraft and helicopters. Some prefer to raft the rapids of the Colorado or perhaps just walk along the vast rim.

Zion National Park, UT

According to the famous geologist, Clarence E. Dutton who in 1882 said “nothing can exceed the wonderful beauty of Zion”, this national park dates back more than two hundred million years ago with extensive human-like formations that are still altering to the present day.

Arches National Park, UT

Renowned for possessing the world’s largest concentation of wind and water carved sandstone arches, the park, created in 1929, sits high above the Colorado River and is part of the Colorado Plateau. The spectacular scenery comprises huge balanced rocks, fins, pinnacles and spires and is believed to have been part of some ancient civilisation by early explorers. Looking at Landscape’s Arch and Delicate Arch, it is not difficult to imagine why.

Yosemite National Park, CA

Situated in the Sierra Nevada valley, the park comprises more than 1 255 kms/780 miles of wilderness trails for all level of hikers together with groves of sequoias, the world’s tallest trees.  Boasting a waterfall seven times higher than Niagara, it has a hiking trail that leads right to its base. Trout fishing and water sports on the Merced River are also always popular and for the more intrepid and experienced climber, there is the sheer face on the famous El Captain Mountain and Halfdome to be conquered.

Yellowstone National Park, WY

America’s first national park was established in 1872 and therefore set a precedent in putting aside natural lands for the enjoyment of all and not just the wealthy few as had previously been the case.  With over 2 million acres, it is also the country’s largest park and the name derived from early Indian tribes who called it ‘Rock Yellow Water’.

The park is an amazing assortment of geysers, mud holes, waterfalls, hot springs and brightly hued thermal pools. All plant life and wildlife (grizzly and black bear, moose, coyote, elk, buffalo and bald eagle) to name just a few, are protected.

Canyonland National Park, UT

The Colorado and Green Rivers divide this park into four sections – the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves. Canyonlands preserves a rugged landscape of countless sandstone canyons, mesas and buttes.

Grand Tetons National Park, WY

This spectacular mountain park is found in northwestern Wyoming with its central feature, the Teton Range, formed from earthquakes that occurred over the past 13 million years,  running for a distance of 64 kms/40 miles. The range’s signature peak, Grand Teton rises to 4 198 metres/13 770 ft with at least 12 other pinnacles at over 3 658 metres/12 000 ft. The base of the range is dotted with seven morainal lakes and there are over 100 alpine lakes in the vicinity.  Much wildlife is found here in the form of elk, moose, deer, bison, black and grizzly bears as well as over 300 species of birdlife.

Other beautiful parks of interest include:

Acadia National Park, ME, Carlsbad Caverns, NM, Lake Powell, AZ, New Gorge National Park, WV and Olympic National Park, WA.
