The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees is a mountain chain of south-western Europe between France and the Iberian Peninsula. Extending east-west from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, it has a maximum width of about 160 kms/100 miles. Truly a walker’s paradise, the Pyrenees offer all that’s best in walking.  Fantastic scenery and such a variety of landscapes from unexplored valleys, scenic lakes and towering mountains. However, it is important to remember that the terrain can be difficult and a certain amount of physical training is necessary. They are approximately 600 kms /373 miles. long, but for a traveller on foot, the distance to walk the entire range is approximately 850kms/528 miles. Most days include at least 1 000 metres/3 281 ft of ascent/descent. There are several local and regional paths in these beautiful mountains, as well as the two major ‘entire range’ paths: the GR10 and the HRP.

GR10 - The Chemin de Grande Randonnée is a lower level route that does not stay with the high peaks and that food, with just a few exceptions, is available every day when following recommended day stages. However, this path is by no means any easy option with the considerable variations in altitude within short distances making it a demanding route.

HRP - The Haute Route Pyrénéenne This path was devised by George Véron in the 1970's and crosses the mountains from east to west, approximately following the Hispano-French border. It keeps very much to the high peaks, which although beautiful and rugged, present a number of problems for the less experienced hikers, mainly that food is not available every day, when walking the route in the suggested stages.
