Northern Territory (NT):

National parks of the ‘Top End’ have a wonderful diversity of wildlife, bird species, desert scenery, waterfalls, walking trails and swamps.

Around Darwin, the territory’s capital, the most famous of these is Kakadu. The majority of travel here is via the Arnhem Highway from Darwin. The Bowali Visitor Centre near Jabiru is located 253 kms away taking about 3 hours travelling time.

This World Heritage listed park is of enormous cultural and environmental importance. One can choose the Wetlands Walk which starts just east of South Alligator River home to thousands of magpie geese, jabirus and other waterbirds or take the Gungarre Monsoon Rainforest Walk west of the river, passing through a forest environment.

Closer to Darwin are the Mary River and Litchfield National Parks. Mary River contains mostly wetlands of monsoon and paperbark forests while Litchfield has rainforest pockets, waterfalls, gorges and strange rock formations.

Positioned between the Top End and the Red Centre are a series of rugged national parks featuring some world famous gorges. These include Elsey, Katherine Gorge, Gregory, Flora River, Limmen, North Island, Gregory (located in the transition zone between tropical and semi-arid areas of the Northern Territory), is a 13 000 sq.km park offering spectacular ranges, gorge scenery and significant traces of Aboriginal culture.Keep River (with similar rock formations as the famous Bungle Bungles in Western Australia) has some excellent walking trails and Nitmiluk National Park boasts 13 stunning gorges and 100 kilometres of hiking tracks. The Red Centre surrounding Alice Springs is the country’s scenic, geographic and mythic heart. Alice Springs Desert Park offers walks through different desert habitats where one can learn about a variety of desert animals.

The Anangu Aboriginal people discourage tourists from climbing Uluru (Ayer's Rock), so there are 4 guided walks offered as alternatives. The 9.4 km walk around the base; the Mala walk to art sites; the Kunlya walk and the Liru walk featuring ‘dreamtime’ stories and bush foods (tucker).

There is a three hour Valley of the Winds walk passing through the numerous gorges of crevices of Kata Tjuta (meaning many heads) also known as ‘The Olgas’ – Uluru’s siter formation of 36 magnificent domes and shapes covering about 35 sq.kms. The famous Larapinta Trail is a 220 km walking track along the gorges, chasms, pools and habitats of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
The Finke Gorge National Park is accessible only by four-wheel drive. Its unique feature is Palm Valley - a 10 000 year old oasis of red fan palms and flowing through the Finke Gorge is the Finke River, possibly the world’s oldest river.
Also of great interest in the general area are the national parks of Davenport Range, Ruby Gap, Watarrka and West MacDonnell.
