Great Dividing Range:

This system of mountain ranges and plateaus in eastern Australia is also known as the Great Divide or Eastern Highlands. It extends for over 3 500 kms (2 175 miles) along the eastern coast of Australia from the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland to the state of Victoria. A branch of the system is submerged in the Bass Strait and reappears as the central highlands in Tasmania.

Some national parks in the path or bordering the Range in Queensland are the Jardine River NP, the Mungkan Kandju NP, the Lakefield NP, the Undara Volcanic NP, the White Mountains NP, the Carnarvon NP and Glass House Mountains NP.

In NSW there are the Girraween NP, the Bald Rock NP, the New England NP, the Barrington Tops NP, the Greater Blue Mountains NP and the Kosciusko NP with Australia’s highest mountain, Mt. Kosciusko at 2 228 metres (7 310 ft).

The Alpine NP, the Lake Eildon NP and the Yarra Ranges NP are Victoria’s parks in proximity to the Range.

The Great Dividing Range varies greatly in both geological age and landform. The eastern slopes are generally steeper than the western. The Blue Mountains are full of deep valleys and high ridges covered with thick vegetation.

The Snowy Mountains are popular for skiing in winter and bushwalking during the other seasons. On the spur of the McPherson Range in Queensland, Hendersons Knob offers gorges, spectacular waterfalls and magnificent bushwalking trails with coastal views.

An interesting track running from the crest of the Great Dividing Range to the coast starts in the Barrington Tops National Park (2 hours north of Sydney) and ends in the seaside town of Tea Gardens (just north of Newcastle, second largest city in NSW).

The 220 km track starts on a sub-alpine plateau

and gradually descends to the coast. It has been marked in one direction only and walkers are advised not to attempt the reverse way as there are no markers. It has 10 designated campsites and takes about 11 days to complete.

The best months to walk this track are March, April, September & October. It can also be tackled at other times of the year, however there are sometimes light snowfalls in winter on the Barrington Tops and the summer months can be very hot and humid particularly towards the coast.
The Great Dividing Trail in central Victoria, west of Melbourne, passes through what was once the richest gold mining area of the world.  The design of the trail is very unusual as it has three arms which meet at the historic town of Daylesford, meaning that if you walk this as a through track, you only complete two of the arms. All three arms have been completed and you can either walk from Bendigo, Ballarat or Bacchus Marsh to Daylesford. The track is suitable for less experienced walkers as the weather is rarely extreme and most of the walking is on firm tracks or old roads.
