General Information about Bushwalking

Bushwalking throughout the world, whether it be called
‘hiking’, ‘trekking’ or ‘tramping’ is a form of weekend or
holiday/vacation recreation that is becoming increasingly
popular throughout many parts of the world.
The growth in popularity is due in part to the development
of lightweight and comfortable gear – including tents,
groundsheets, sleeping bags, freeze-dry foods, hiking boots
and clothing and various types of rucksacks.  Excluding
food, the gear for the modern walker need not exceed
9kgs/20lbs for a summer weekend walk.

Physical recreation is not the
only aim of bushwalkers.
Many also partake in nature
study, bird watching and
photography.  The main
objectives of most serious
walkers and walking clubs is
the dedication of large areas
of the country as national
parks, public reserves and
the preservation and
protection of local flora and
fauna.
