New Zealand (North island)

General:

New Zealand is an independent parliamentary state and member of the Commonwealth, comprising two main islands (North and South islands) and smaller associated islands in the South Pacific Ocean about 1 600 kms/1 000 miles south-east of Australia.

Hiking is the best way of exploring N.Z.’s natural beauty of spectacular mountain ranges, deep gorges and valleys, volcanoes, mountain lakes, thermal activity areas and endless scenic tracks and trails in the many beautiful National Parks. The bushwalker will feel quite overwhelmed by all the choices.

~

Hiking Far North: (5.5. days) – Grade: Easy (day hikes only)

This is one of the shorter and easier hiking trips with many great day hikes as well as plenty of swimming and snorkelling.  It is also somewhat warmer in the ‘winterless’ North and some of the highlights include the Bay of Islands remote forested coastal walk and the total isolation at the very tip of the island.Volcanoes & Rainforests: (10 days) – Grade: Medium (river crossings, some rocky terrain)

Includes the Urewera N.P. (the largest wilderness in the North Island) via the hot geysers town of Rotorua, hiking through the Podocarp rainforest and exploring the beautiful gorge in the Whirinaki Forest Park.  Then there is Lake Tarawera, the volcanic wonderland of Tongariro N.P. climbing the summit of an active volcano.  There are many waterfalls, limestone formations and hiking into Mt. Egmont N.P.

North Island Adventure: (5 days) – Grade: Medium (some alpine hiking and uneven terrain)

Hiking at Karangahake Gorge and along Lakes Okataina and Tarawera. Visit the fascinating hot springs and geysers town of Rotorua, hike in Tongariro N.P. and enjoy caving at Waitomo to see glowworms and limestone formations.

New Zealand Hiking Tour: (20 days) – Grade: Easy + (up to 7 hours hiking) An ideal trip for those who wish to see both islands and do many short hikes along the way. The tour includes Rotorua, the volcanic crater of Mount Tarawera, Urewera N.P., Lake Waikaremoana,

the Tongariro Crossing, Queen Charlotte Walkway, Hanmer Springs, Fox Glacier, Mount Aspiring N.P. and Milford Sound.

Lake Waikaremoana: (4 days) – Grade: Medium (track uneven in places)

This lake is situated in Te Urewera N.P. which is the largest area of untouched natural wilderness remaining in the North Island. A climb to the Panekiri Ridge through dense Podocarp rainforests

and along the Ridge to the spectacular bluffs, sandstone rock ledges that drop sheer to the lake 600 metres/1 969 ft below.
